Aaron got his group together on Armistice Day to start some Great War on the table. We played on an 8x4 table, 2 players per side, and each side had 300 points.
This time the allies were on the defence. Mark's Canadians held the left flank while Aaron's Metropolitan French held the right. Todd and Jon's Germans formed along the front, using their infantry to keep the defenders busy while massing their armor against the left flank, hoping to overwhelm them.
We hadn't played the Great War since the new edition dropped so we were suprised to have the German tanks come back after we killed them, an odd departure from the old rules but made for an interesting game.
The game starts with a preliminary bombardment which pins all of the defenders down, not much of a problem for the Canadians who rally on a 3+ but the French Metropolitan infantry are weary and only do so on a 5+
The Germans punched a hole in the left flank quickly, owing to some lucky rolls in ridding the Canadians of their 18 pounders, allowing the A7Vs and captured MkIV freedom to roam. The Germans tried to swarm the gap hoping their armor would keep the Allies' heads down but lucky reinforcement rolls got the Autocars in the right spot to mow down platoon after platoon of Germans attempting the expoit.
Eventually, the Germans swept the far left objective. Luckily, the French FT-17s turned up directly in front of the German exploitation and went on to charge into the trenches, pushing a stoss platoon back, though this zealous counterattack was swiftly crushed by the 3 nearby A7Vs. Once the FT-17s were destroyed, there was nothing left to stop the Germans from taking the objective and winning the game.
