One of the intriguing new formations in the latest WW3 Soviet book is the T-80 Shock Formation. Based around a solid core of T-80 tanks, it fights a lot like a NATO formation, with small units of good tanks that are hit on 4s and skilled, veteran infantry in BMP-3s or BMP-2s.
Garry tried out the formation against my US M1A1 tank formation, and we had an excellent game.
My assault started well with my airmobile infantry clearing a town and assaulting through a wooded field to threaten the nearer objective. My M1s pushed around the Soviet flank, and things were looking good for NATO.
Then disaster hit - Garry got a reserve unit on his first roll, which arrived behind the M1s. No worries, they were concealed and only hit on 5s. Garry rolled, and scored 3 hits. He then threw three more fives for firepower, and my 72 point tank unit was a smoking ruin. The last M1, obviously rattled, passed his last stand roll but then missed on his shots, and was soon burning as well. The NATO assault faltered, and had to pull back. Victory to the Soviets! Great fun.
