The GHS Group opened their set of Ancients games in early May with a hoplite clash between Athens and Sparta, set during the Pelopennesian Wars.
Hoplite warfare is often thought of as just a push of spears, but Hail Caesar provides a nice engine allowing differentiation between different troop qualities, while retaining a simple and clean play sequence.
The Spartan forces started the engagement strongly, but the Athenians gradually fed in reserves, slowing the Spartan advance.
In the end neither army was able to break the other, leaving the action as a hard fought draw. It was great fun to push some hoplites around again.
