US M12s Pound the German Defenses
Flames of War Operation Cobra: Defence of Pont Farcy

We recently finished the afternoon of July 26, 1944 turn in our Operation Cobra campaign, and a pivotal battle was fought out around the Norman village of Pont Farcy, a critical river crossing and German supply source southeast of St Lo.

The German 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich, supported by the 3rd Fallschirmjager Division, defended this critical town against the American 2nd Armored and 5th Infantry Divisions.

The mission we played was contact, with Bart running 120 points of Germans, drawn from the 2nd SS Panzer. Gary countered with a strong armored force drawn from the veteran US 2nd Armored division, and deployed to rush the objective on Bart's right.

The fighting was heavy frmom the start, with the US armor pushing aggressively directly on the German right objective, while trying to pin the remainder of the German line. Bart was hard pressed, but an ambush of Panthers just barely managed to blunt the assault, and as the German reserves began arriving it was clear that the Americans would not win the day.

This was a tense and fast paced fight, a really interesting tactical challenge for both sides. Much more campaign action to come!
